The Maldives has a reputation problem. Most people assume it's exclusively the domain of overwater bungalows at $1,500 a night and honeymoon couples who only step off their deck to eat. That reputation is earned β but it's only half the story.
The other half involves local islands, proper guesthouses, the best fish curry you'll ever eat, and snorkelling so extraordinary it will genuinely ruin everything else for you. Here's everything you need to explore it for real.
"There are two Maldives β the resort islands and the real islands. Most travellers only ever see one of them."
When to Visit the Maldives
The dry season runs November through April β clear skies, calm seas, excellent visibility for snorkelling and diving. May to October is the wet season; fewer tourists, lower prices, and still plenty of sun between showers. We visited in October and had near-perfect conditions every day.
Best Budget Islands to Base Yourself
The local island system opened to tourism in 2009 and completely changed what's possible for budget travellers. Our top picks:
- Maafushi β most developed local island; great mix of guesthouses, a bikini beach, and excellent snorkelling right off the pier.
- Fulidhoo β quieter, fewer tourists, spectacular house reef with reef sharks and rays most mornings.
- Dhigurah β famous for whale shark encounters; a long white sand beach almost entirely to yourself at either end.
What to Eat & What It Costs
Local cafΓ© breakfast: $2β4. Tuna curry and rice lunch: $4β6. Grilled fish dinner at a guesthouse restaurant: $8β12. The food is genuinely excellent β fresh skipjack tuna in almost everything, rich coconut curries, and deep-fried short eats that cost cents and are completely addictive.
